PENANG STATE GOVERNMENT RELEASES STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES (SOPs) FOR TOURISM
HOTELS, ATTRACTIONS AND SHOPPING MALLS
GEORGE TOWN – The Penang State EXCO Office for Tourism, Arts, Culture and Heritage will be introducing a COVID-19 compliance accreditation programme soon for tourism players to comply with SOPs required by the relevant authorities.
Taking a step ahead during this recovery period, Penang will be the first state in Malaysia to kickstart this initiative by the Penang State Government and lead by PETACH.
Working together with PETACH to ensure the operators meet and adhere to strict hygiene and safety standards are Jabatan Kesihatan Negeri Pulau Pinang (JKN), Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang (MBPP) and Majlis Bandaraya Seberang Perai (MBSP) and Penang Global Tourism (PGT).
PETACH EXCO YB Yeoh Soon Hin said the main objective of the accreditation programme is to encourage higher compliances towards SOPs in line with state efforts to educate the importance of preventive and sanitisation routines in controlling the outbreak of Covid-19.
In long term, it can also serve to build confidence towards Penang as a safe tourism destination as tourism adapts the ‘new norm’ of the industry.
“Prior to starting this accreditation programme, we released the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) of various tourism industry sectors such as hotels, attractions and shopping malls.
“The approved SOPs will then take effect at the respective establishments.
“Then, they can choose to participate in the COVID-19 compliance accreditation programme.
“The authorities will then carry out a thorough audit to ensure all standards are complied with before validating them to receive the COVID-19 safety accreditation,” said Yeoh, adding that the system will be launched soon once it is ready.
Penang’s tourism industry players have expressed their enthusiasm to participate in this accreditation programme – namely members of the Malaysian Association of Hotels, Penang Branch (MAH), Association of Tourism Attractions Penang (ATAP), Malaysian Association of Tour and Travels Agents, Penang Branch (MATTA) and Malaysian Chinese Tourism Association, Penang Branch (MCTA).
